re: Current through ignition switch
I have no idea what sort of current is passing through the ignition
switch, but having Trusty much through two second hand starters
has made me somewhat of an expert.
On my car, the switch wasn't the problem, the solenoid in the
first starter was a problem. I swapped the starter out for
another 2nd hand unit which had completely buggered brushes
(it worked for a month or so though).
A rebuilt starter (at about $50AUD more than another 2nd hand unit)
solved everything.
Even so, I've installed a relay between the starter solenoid
and the ignition switch as per the recommendation of some others
on the digest. The wiring is simple (the ignition switch switches
the relay, the relay itself is wired between the +ve post on
the solenoid and the solenoid activator). Fresh starter and
relay combination provides insta-crank.
I wouldn't bother with a push button, and even if I did, I'd still
use a relay instead of running all that current back up to the
dashboard unnecessarily.
