The lever I believe is supposed to channel heated or fresh air to the floor
or cut off the floor vents and channel all the air to the dash and defrost
outlets.
Don't bother to fix it, they do not work. I think they were made by the same
company that makes the pedestrian-pacifier switches that are not connected to
the WALK-DON'T WALK lights at intersections.
The good news is that in most Alfas, and in the GTV6 particularly, the
heating is very good. The bad news, of course, is that these systems are
always a little quirky at best and frequently have some screwy design
notions: you can't turn off the cold air to the floor in a 75 completely; you
can't blow heat out of the center of a newer spider w/o putting on the second
(AC) fan (but in ours this does deliver heat - if you like it in your face);
the GTV6 was not designed to deliver either heat or AC through the eyeballs,
only ext. air; you are supposed to close the defrost vents when using the AC,
but in test after test, it works BETTER if you leave them open and spin them
around to blow into the cabin (away from the windshield); in the both our
GTV6 and 75, you could get head or fresh air from the dash only if the fan is
on to push it out, but in the spiders some air will push its own way through
unaided...
'Tis pretty minor in comparison to the DRIVING peculiarities of even some
very popular vehicles from other makers.
Or, as they used to say in Boston's North End (Norda Ent), "Nontcha Warry!"
