Spindle Damage

I (novice shade tree mechanic) removed the driver front hub and rotor on my
82 Spider for the first time. That took 15 minutes. Removing the
main bearing from the spindle took 2 hours, and only was accomplished with
the bearing in pieces.

The spindle is scored in several places and therefore would not release the
bearing until almost at the end of the spindle (and my patience),

Question: How do you know if you have to replace the spindle? Can the
spindle be repaired by grinding down the burrs? Who sells spindles? Is it
safe to install a used one?

Any help appreciated.
