project Alfetta

In V8 #560 Wayne Abbott asks about starter shoulder bolts: "The Alfetta
got the bell housing reinstalled and the passenger side motor mount. It
seems that I came up one bolt short. The starter is held in place
by 3 bolts at the ring gear end and one at the motor mount end.

"Which bolt goes where at the ring gear end? I have two special
shoulder
bolts, each is different. Where do each of these go and is the third
just a
regular bolt or did I lose something special?"

Wayne, you only need one shoulder bolt in the middle starter / bell
housing hole. I'd try each separately. Without the other two bolts
installed, the starter will of course rock back forth, but there should
be Very Little play in the bolt / starter / bell housing when pushing up
and down on it. Use the best one.

Too lazy to double check but believe the shoulder bolts are 8 mm x 1.0
(fine)or of course could be 8 x 1.25. I'd buy two regular bolts same
length, same pitch, with flat and lock washers and nuts.

Since there will be a little play with the non-shouldered bolts
(assuming the center bolts hasn't been tightened) I'm guessing in theory
it really doesn't matter at that point (to repeat) as long as the
shoulder bolt is in the center. However, if the starter isn't engaging
as you'd prefer, loosen all three and wiggle and tighten it in the
opposite direction.

We're only talking tiny fractions, so doubt if it will make much
difference.
