RE: Calorific value of hydrogen??

Hi Michael,

In AD V8 #505 you stated:

Electrolysis of H2O cannot create surplus energy for hydrogen fuel cell
vehicles. The energy required to split the water cannot be recovered by
burning the hydrogen. Furthermore, hydrogen is a pathetic fuel, you need a
whole bunch to generate any kind of thermal energy. It's the Carbon in
Hydrocarbon that gives you the energy.

It might interest you to know the calorific value of the various fuels and
then reconsider your comment.

Gasoline 18,000-19,000 Btu/lb
Diesel 18,000-19,000 Btu/lb
Methanol 8,570 Btu/lb
Ethanol 11,500 Btu/lb
Propane 19,800 Btu/lb
Hydrogen 51,532 Btu/lb

These figures were obtained from the American Petroleum Institute Research
Project 44, NBS C-461 publication.

As you can see Hydrogen has by far the highest calorific contant by weight
and therefore would be an ideal fuel as it produces no pollutants!
