RE: Spider seat swaps

That's why they say YMMV! :-) Maybe its because I have really long legs
and even Recaros don't support my thighs and knees enough. With the
exception of trips to Roebling or VIR, the Spider doesn't get much
long-distance use with the Milano in the stable.
Mounting the passenger side is actually pretty easy if you have the
mounts from the Porsche and I suspect that otehr cars use the same mount
system. Unlike the flat Alfa mounts, the Porsche mount/adjuster is a
short, wide "U" with the wide part mounted to the seat bottom and the
short sides of the "U" point DOWN and have a hole in them. The other
part of the mount is a short, wide "U" that comes up from the floor with
the short sides pointing up and are also drilled and tapped. To mount
the seat, you simply bolt the the short sides of the "U" together on
each side. You also need the flat bar stock spacers to fit the mount to
the floor, but once you do that the holes line right up, just like the
drivers' side.
On the drivers' side, I used a MotoTool to cut away the track area
around the bolt holes where the track mounts to the floor -- that way I
could use hex head bolts instead of the phillips head screws that Alfa
used or the allen head bolts that are on some Spiders. The overhang on
the front of the Recaros makes it tough to get a even a stubby allen key
in there to tighten the seat down.
I wanted the seats to mount as low as possible since I'm tall, and the
Recaros with the Alfa mount are not any higher than the stock seats and
might even be a bit lower. the passenger side is, of course, higher, but
I'm rarely a passenger!
