Spider VVT diagnosis

Is there a website about somewhere that can detail the process for 
correctly assessing VVT function? I don't yet have all the shop 
manuals/Cardisc etc for the Spider ('87 Veloce), so I wanted to get 
started perhaps with a website out there somewhere. Thanks in advance,
