Biba's Q & A time

Biba's questions in italics, and my answers/comments in standard text.
(hoping the formatting comes through)

It's question time:

(A) Does anyone have a reliable source for early Alfetta GT driveshaft
supports?

When I had mine replace in my 76 Alfetta GT some years ago, now, it was
a nightmare. I finally found a new one at APE, No kidding. All other
parties stated it was NLA. Leads to believe that APE had some NOS. Not
a matter of someone remfg them. Damn. I shudder at having to replace
the center support when the current one comes up short on life
expectancy.

(Aa) Is everything else the same on the supports except the distance
between the two holes? (This includes bearings, slingers, etc.).

I did not do the work. That was Santo Rimicci's responsibility. That
was when I changed to a late model clutch and input shaft. I saw, but
did not make good notes on the differences between a late model and old
model center support. Sorry.

(Ab) Assuming early Alfetta GT driveshaft supports are truly history,
what have you done to resolve this issue in a positive and effective
way? (Sort of remind you of your first job interview?).

See above. I am not yet at the gnashing of teeth and wailin stage. I
should piggy back on your research. I would like to know, as would you,
what it would take to adapt the late model center support (Same as
GTV6???) to an early car.

(B) (Possibly / probably revolves around the tinkling I heard from her
rear): Having just removed, for the first time today, the 75's throwout
bearing's arm / Y / yoke, there was a portion of a rubber (?) thingy
(would love to know what the part's manual would call it) between the
inside concave portion of the 'arm' and it's ball-type thingy therein.
(Trust me if you've never been there you would Never understand.
However, should you have a transaxle sitting in your lap as we speak,
betcha you too would be hard pressed to come up with better terms, and
might even smile at my feeble but valiant attempt).

Do they exist, have you ever seen one, does leaving them out cause
tinkling???

huh??

(C) How tough is it to replace synchrosespecially 2nd gear's?

You're meanin' to tell me you just shoved an old trans in without
checking the innards first? I thought that all Alfa owners knew better
than that, given the sum of experience with 2d gear sychros. When I got
my car (used) I figured that the synchros were somewhere near Duluth.
They certainly weren't doing much in Southern California, in my car at
least.

Don't answer and fill out the invoice yet...we're not through until the
fat transaxle and driveshaft sing (sweetly and in complete harmony).

These be my two cents worth, whether the trans and shaft are singing
yet. Hope it all goes together well. I may well have something riding
on that situation.
