electrical, 78 spider

Last weekend, after noit driving for a couple of weeks, my battery was
discharged, no indications of any problems except the turn signals did not
work.  Took battery out and charged it.  Today, hooked it up and smoke from
undser the hood.  It is now at a mechanic's to get the problem solved.  Any
ideas as to what the problem might be?
