Peter,

The symptoms that you describe don't sound too much like motor mounts.  A
noise that is related to wheel speed must be somewhere in your drive train.
Having done the motor mount thing over Christmas, I would say that even if
they are badly worn or collapsed, the motor should not move enough to make
anything grind.

There are three mounts - two on the timing belt side that do most of the
work, and one at the gearbox side.  You can check for wear by unbolting the
top dog-bone mount and rocking the motor.  If this doesn't tell you
anything, the wear usually manifsts itself as clunking when power is
applied or you lift off.  Try a few cycles of accelerating quickly then
backing off.  You will generate some lovely big clunks if the mounts are
shot.
