2L Clutches
Having suffered a clutch failure in my GTV at last weekend's time trials
at Willow Springs i would like to know what all of you that spin your 2L
105/115 engines up past 7000 rpm are using to avoid this sort of
occurrence.
The clutch in question was an OEM F&S, generally considered to be more
robust than the equivalent Valeo units. What happened is that 2 of the
thin metal straps which center and connect the pressure plate to the
clutch housing broke when the rpm's hit somewhere in the mid 7's. (BTW,
the bottom end on this car was balanced by one of the best, so the
failure was not due to some other inherent imbalance.)
I have heard of the lightweight 215 mm F&S unit which was originally
produced for late 60's 2L Porsches, and that these could handle higher
revs, but:
1) am also told they are NLA
2) the design is actually identical to the OEM unit (ie. using the thin
metal straps to locate the pressure plate) except that the pressure
plate is of some lightweight treated aluminum.
So, what else is there? A Tilton racing clutch would also require a
Tilton flywheel and friction disk, which is prohibitively expensive for
me. Anyone come up with any other solutions?
Thanks,
Peter Kemos
