Got the hot tip for autobody patch cutting yesterday, and ran out and
bought a Fein Multimaster tool and saw blade.

Imagine mating a Dremel to a sander... The Fein multimaster is a
ocillating tool, that accepts sanding pads (for detail sanding), carbide
rasps, knife blades, scraper blades (power paint stripper) and most
importantly (in my opinion) a variety of saw blades. It works just
like the saws they use to remove casts. It's surprisingly safe...
while cutting out a patch panel yesterday I accidentally touched the saw
blade while it was running and didn't even get a scratch.
What makes it so handy is: Cut out a piece of sheetmetal larger than
the area to be patched. Attach over area to be patched with clecos, or
just tack weld it. Then cut through the patch and the body at the same
time. You now have a patch that is a perfect fit for the hole you made.
The saw kerf is perfect for a nice mig welded butt joint.
What's cool is that controlling the depth of cut is very easy, and you
don't have to worry about it grabbing stuff that's behind the panel like
a rotating saw blade might.
It's German made, high quality and good design. The instruction manual
and accessories guide are remarkably well done.
I can imagine tons of uses around the house for it. Safe enough that
it doesn't scare the wife away either.
Amazon.com has decent prices, esp. on the single speed version ($129)
the high speed steel sheetmetal blade is about $40.
I have no financial interest... I'm just a happy owner. I wish I'd
have had this when I started doing body repair. Cutting a good fitting
patch is so much more difficult than actually welding.
