This makes sense--my friend's Milano experienced the exact same 
problem last winter but it mysteriously corrected itself when the 
weather warmed up, before I had a chance to fix it.  However, the 
problem hasn't come back with the cold weather this year, and one of 
the things we did to that car over the summer was install oversize 
grounding wires on the rear lamp clusters.
