Now Boschetti must shake up Fiat Auto, which has lost  1.35 billion over the
past three years. Those chronic losses caused the resignation of former Fiat
Auto chief Roberto Testore, who resigned Monday, Dec. 10. The final straw came
when the Italian automaker, which had expected to make money this year,
acknowledged it would post an operating loss of  200 million.

The automaker said Testore, who became managing director in 1996, "refused
other senior positions within the Fiat Group."


Each business unit will be "fully responsible for its financial performance,
featuring separate product development, production, marketing and commercial
organizations," Fiat said.

Maintaining Alfa Romeo as a separate business unit underlines its role as the
international brand of Fiat Auto. Production of the 156 begins next year in
Thailand, and the automaker will likely return to the North American market in
2004, via a GM distribution channel. The restructuring also would make it
easier for Fiat to sell Alfa Romeo.
