One more heater core question ...

On my 164Q - is the heater core always "hot"? In other words, if the heat is OFF, will the car still lose coolant?
 
I'm trying to determine if/when I should tow the car to my mechanic... if I can keep the heat off and not lose coolant, I could conceivably drive the car to the shop.
