On our former Milano the driver's seat padding was getting rather tired
(although the upholstery was like new) so I had it replaced. When I picked
up the car the seatback adjusters were not working. The upholsterer rolled
the car next door to a pal in the auto electric business who discovered that
something (spade connectors?) were not tight. This is not the end, but only
the beginning, though.

Once the electrical connection was solid, the seatbacks worked in the
opposite direction from what was indicated by the switches: calling for up
got you down. The rather elderly electrical specialist told me this was a
common problem with small electrical motors on cars, didn't I recall the
whatsis on the 53 Mercury, and because of being disconnected and reattached,
or jostled, or perhaps some other reason entirely, the polarity of the
seatback motors had reversed. The method he knew for fixing it was rather
simple, if brutal: one sharp whack on the motor with the handle of a very
large and heavy screwdriver.

And it worked!
