I would not claim to be an expert on Alfa Engines, (I have rebuilt a half dozen or so though) but I have had good luck removing the old roll pins even when nearly flush with the block, a sheet metal screw and a slide hammer has never failed to remove the old pins. 
I just dont like the idea of pounding the old roll pins down into the block and leaving them there.
