(NAC) SOS - advice on driving north in CA

Due to a sudden death in our family, my mom finds herself returning home by
driving up I-5 from Southern California in a rented Nissan Maxima with
automatic transmission. She is by herself (well, aside from the 16
year-old-dog she inherited from her sister), and on the first leg made it to
Dixon, CA (where she's staying the night) from San Bernardino.

When she got to the motel, they told her there was a "blizzard in northern
California and I-5 is closed".

I'm at home and my hard disk keeps failing, so I can barely even get email
here and I don't know the news and don't know what to advise her. She was
wondering if just driving to Yreka would be a safe next step.

Can any of you who make the I-5 trek share any advice on what I should
advise her? She's (1) not a very confident driver, and (2) getting up there
in years. I would imagine that (3) she's awfully tired and strung out too,
after sitting with her sister in the hospital for 2 weeks before the death
and then making all the, you know, arrangements and stuff...

Thanks,

Tess
