Re: alfa-digest V8 #236 - Brake upgrades
Get rid of the Valvoline Synthetic. I used it in my Alfa Spider race
car because it had great appearing dry boiling point. Turns out, I developed
way too much brake pedal travel and spongy brakes. I changed back to ATE
fluid and put in a new set of front Porterfield pads. Brakes are now back to
reasonable for a race car.
That was at Alfa Rodeo at Hallett Oklahoma last July. Andy Garcia was
there with his GTV-6 race car. He also had been using Valvoline and we both
switched back to ATE at the same time.
Valvoline works fine on the street, if you never get the fluid hot. I
prefer Dot 4 fluid, so that means Castrol LMA or ATE. Plus the ATE Super
Blue Racing Fluid has a pretty blue color <grin>. It is also available in
the ordinary yellowish color. I got the ATE fluid from Centerline last
summer.
If you just want pretty brake fluid, add a drop of food coloring to
any old fluid. Old racers trick, or at least I heard it from an old racer -
change colors a lot so you can tell when you are done bleeding the system.
