John -  I agree that in the grand scheme of things this doesn't even rise to 
the level of an insignificant issue.  I just wondered if I was missing 
something really obvious.

To all:  I figured out how the key split apart, but the battery compartment 
appears to be sealed.  Looks like those of us with formerly lighted keys 
will have to find some other way to illuminate the darkness.  :-)
