Re: Death Rattle
In AD V8 #97, Michael S. said his GTV6 has a "rattling clunking sound that can
be heard from the engine area" but isn't sure if it's the "transaxle, clutch,
engine or what". An easy test is to sit in the car with the engine idling,
trans in neutral and foot off the clutch. Listen to the sound. Now very
lightly put pressure on the clutch pedal. Does the noise go away? If so, it's
the release bearing. If the noise is still there, put the clutch to the floor.
Does the noise stop now? If so, the noise is coming from somewhere in the
drivetrain. If the noise is still there, it's coming from the engine. I now
this doesn't pinpoint the exact cause but at least it'll put you in the
ballpark.
Good luck.
