Black soot out the exhaust pipe is a good indicator. Blue smoke is
oil, white is water / antifreeze, and black is over rich in gasoline. The
inside of the tip of the exhaust pipe should be simular, but is not a good
indiator as any Alfa four will burn some oil, especially on deceleration.
Spark plugs are the best indicator. Again, black and oily tips
indicate oil burning. Black, dry, sooty looking tips indicate over rich.
White is lean. Light brown is correct. Go to the library and find a good
auto repair manual. There should be color pictures of spark plugs in various
states of less than ideal conditions.
On a Bosch car, I seriously doubt that you are running over rich.
Even with the O2 sensor out of the circuit, the cars just run a bit richer
than normal.
