164 motor mounts

I tackled the replacement of the 164 top "dog bone" motor mounts
recently. The new mounts are the SuperPros from AlfaBill. It wasn't
that bad a job. The secret seemed to be to leave the front most mount
attached to the car when removing the old bushing. Removing
everything from the car did not look easy.

As with the other SuperPro bushings I've installed, removing the old
bad ones is the hard part. The standard plan of attack is to use a
hack saw to cut through the sleeve -but not the sleeve holder- in two
places close to one another and then use a heavy hammer and chisel to
remove the strip and then the rest of the steel sleeve.

Usually before getting to the hack saw part, you have to remove the
old rubber with a torch. The tricky part of removing the old front
bushing was using the torch while it was still attached to the car
without setting anything on fire. I made a heat shield out of
aluminum foil.

I placed a couple of pictures of how I hacked the old one out and the
new dogbone with the funky colored SuperPro bushings installed at

I also replaced the right rear motor mount. I had purchased all the
lower mounts about 1 year ago, but couldn't figure out how to get the
old RR one out because the bolt from the A-arm prevented me from
getting a wrench or socket on on the mount bolts. AlfaBill inspired
me to take another crack at it and I was more success full this time
by using a thin walled deep socket. The only thing I am worried about
is that I may have damaged something because of how hard I had to jack
the engine in order to get the clearance I needed. I wonder if I
didn't damage the flex exhaust pipes as the car seems a little louder
now.

It is much tighter to drive, but it sometimes jerks a little when I
let up the clutch in first gear but that could be because I haven't
adjusted yet.
