Perhaps with those nice high compression readings at that high mileage the
engine has already been overhauled?  If so, maybe there's a chance that the
block was line bored at the same time?

If so, that might account for the slack in the lower chain.  Line boring an
Alfa block results in a crank that sits slightly higher, such that the chain
ends up being a little bit loose.

If so, simply replacing the chain won't help.

It's expensive to figure out if this is the problem, and more expensive to
fix it.  You might be better off just leaving things alone.
