Engine Compartment Noise- 164S

In the last few weeks, a persistent noise has developed in my 164S under
hard acceleration around 3K RPM, mostly in 5th gear. It appears to be
coming from the engine/trans area. If I'm going uphill on the freeway,
accelerating hard, and reach near the 3K rpm mark, I hear a loud
rustling/flapping noise coming from the engine bay. It increases in
intensity as the car pulls harder, then disappears around 4K rpm. It is
not pinging, though it occurs under the same circumstances.

I put the car up on jack stands and held it at around 3K rpm in each
gear, then listened to the transmission and engine with a stethoscope.
Couldn't find anything unusual. I drained the transmission fluid- clean,
with no metal particles. The oil is fresh, with no signs of trouble.
I've had a difficult time lately getting the lower cam belt cover to fit
without rubbing. I was wondering if possibly a sympathetic vibration of
the engine at a particular rpm might vibrate the cover or covers. Anyone
out there every run into this situation?
