RE: Emissions question
Demitri;
I re-test failed vehicles almost every day up here in Canada..we call it
"Drive Clean". There are a few things we do that yields successfull results.
1)Check to see that your 02 sensor isn't faulty, an open loop would cause a
rich condition(usually the "check engine" light is on)
2)Change the air filter & engine oil
3)Inspect coolant level & strength.
4)Inspect for tune-up (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, pcv etc. also check for
vacuum leaks)
5)Inspect the Cat (if you run the car in the open loop "rich" condition or
burn oil for a long period of time it could be damaged)
6)Inspect the gas cap & E-Vap system to ensure that it is not faulty and all
intact.
7)Inspect for engine burning oil or coolant at the tailpipe.
Finally just before you test, go for a hard run on the freeway for about a
steady 15-20 minutes. This will ensure that the motor is at operating temp,
the cat has reached temp & the heat will clean out any residue in the
exhaust. (If you do blow smoke, try using a higher viscosity oil just for
the test, usually a car that burns oil does not pass)
P.S. I also inspect for aftermarket fuel pressure regulators and/or a
"Chipped" computer if applicable or add-ons such as "Split Second" units.
For the test, re-installing the stock chip and/or re-calibrate fuel
pressure, Air/Fuel Ratio & Timing Maps on Split Second units to stock specs
.
Good Luck!

Subject: Emissions question
Hello everyone,
I have a 1985 Alfa Spider and I just recently moved to Northern
California (Sonora) 60 miles east of Modesto and Stockton. I took the car
in for the CA smog inspection and it failed at idle because of too high CO
(6.5%) emissions. If anyone has any suggestions regarding which things
should be checked and repaired, I would greatly appreciate the information.
I'm also looking for a mechanic who works on Alfa's in the area. Any leads
would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
