In v8 #31, Lawrence Gowin responded to an earlier
posting thus:

"You're not insane, but whoever did this probably is."

...and then there was another posting from someone
familiar with a rotting Elan hulk in NJ, who was
trying to figure out how you'd go about making such a
swap.

My guess is that the Elan in question is not the
well-known Cosworth-Ford roadster (you know, like the
one Mrs. Peel had), but the much later car that had
FWD and an Isuzu engine/drivetrain, laid out similarly
to the 164 unit.
