Since I recently performed this operation on my '66 Giulia Sprint GT -
and I believe this was the first time the screws were out since the car
left Milan (Arese?) in '66 - let me make a suggestion: A hammer-driven
impact driver works GREAT for this application. This little hand tool
should be in everyone's tool box who works on older cars. About an
inch in diameter and 5 inches long, it has a 1/2" square drive at one
end, and the other end is just flat. You whomp the flat end with a
hammer, and the internal screw makes the square drive turns a little.
But, the beauty of the thing is that while it is exerting torque, the force
from the hammer blow is holding your flat or Philips bit in the screw slot.
These tools also work great for removing the screws on door hinges
and brake disks. I use a heavy rubber mallet to clobber mine.
