Tail light lenses--are they chromed?

I've tried a high quality silver paint (Nybco's Silver
Touch) applied with a paint brush and although the result
looks better than the mottled surface I started with,
the surface is not really as reflective as the

A cheap and effective fix I have used is silver Mylar film, like that
from which helium party baloons or gift wrap are made. It is about as
reflective as the chrome finish on the plastic, and
 it seems to hold up well. Probably wouldn't cost you any points at the
concours d'elegance unless the judges take your light apart and find a
clown face or other decoration on the other side of the reflective
material.
