Re: 105 Steering box, steering slop, et al.

So far, I haven't seen any direct answer to what was originally asked
for. If you can determine that the slop IS in the steering box, and is
NOT a result of worn bushings, there is a way to adjust it out. There
are two adjustments that can be made to a Burman box, both by changing
shims. The end float of the steering column is adjusted by shims under
the square plate at the far forward end where the horn wire comes out.
This one is not likely to be the problem, and removing it to change
shims carries a danger that the balls will fall out, or worse yet, fall
inside the box. The only useful adjustment is the end play of the shaft
that drives the steering arm. This one is adjusted by removing shims
under the small oval plate at the top of the box near the fill hole.
You need to have somebody wiggle the steering wheel while you feel for
VERTICAL play in the shaft. Any side play indicates worn bushings, which
can't be adjusted out. If you remove too many shims, the box may wear
prematurely, which is also bad. It helps to remove the steering arm at
the bottom while checking for end play at the top.
