In France, they have a mandatory mechanical inspection ("Controle
technique"). All cars of more than 4 years have to pass this 133-point
inspection (each 2 years).
The organization in charge of the controle publishes annually all the
data that has been gathered (millions of inspections), including the
"failing rates". Obviously,
in interpreting these figures one has to keep in mind that they also
reflect the kind of maintenance that the cars received from their
owner. But these rates of
"non-conformite" can probably be used as an indication of a model's
reliability.
For more details: http://www.utac.com/PAGES/Bilan.htm
For the 164 (in the 6-9 year old category), the failing rate is 21.54 %
This compares to (SAME AGE CATEGORY) :
BMW 3 Series (II) 16.31 %
BMW 5 Series (III) 12.70 %
Chrysler LeBaron 12.54 %
Fiat Uno (II) 24.06 %
Ford Escort 26.58 %
Honda Civic (III) 18.02 %
Lada Samara 36.58 %
Mazda 323 (IV) 13.80 %
Mercedes 190 8.69%

Saab 900 (I) 15.12 %
Subaru Legacy 8.84 %
Toyota Camry (II) 8.33 %
Volvo 850 5.74 %

They have no data for the 156 (too early) but for Alfasuds (more than 10
years), the failing rate is 35.21 %.
