Re: alfa-digest V7 #1438
Dear Lawrence: You may be in for further dissapointment if your scenario
parallels mine even a little bit. My story.... in March of '98 I bought a '65
Guilia Spider project car, gave it to an "Alfa Specialist" body shop where it
languished for three weeks with not an hour of work applied. I then moved it
closer to home to a well-reputed body shop with a promise of completing the
ground up bodywork within 6 months. 18 months later (Sept. '99) I threw up my
hands and took the car (shell) away from that shop as they had booked less
than 40 hours into what was expected to be a 300 hour project. I finally gave
it to a small shop that specializes in restorations and it is almost done
since they worked on it steadily since last October. I expect the body to be
finished this month.
The problem with all of these shops is that they live off the insurance
agents. The agents send them the work and the cars need to be back on the
road fast. The body shop that doesn't satisfy the insurance companies with
speedy repair gets no more work. If you really want to get your GTV done find
a restoration shop that doesn't do collision work.

Subject: Average Time in Bodyshop?
My GTV is in the bodyshop for some minor surgery (1 rocker, 1 fender repair
section, a wheel arch to bumper section, and a little bit around the
windshield) and a basecoat/clearcoat paint job. The car has been in the
shop for about two months, and has received about 2 hours of attention. I
was quoted a month turnaround time. We've had fantastic weather, and I
don't have a classic car to drive. I am intensely frustrated, but I don't
think the time scales I'm experiencing are out of the ordinary. For those
that have given their cars up to bodyshops, how long does it usually take?
I'm not going to rush or threaten them, but I really want my car back so I
can get it back on the road. Thanks in advance.
