164S O2 sensor

a few weeks back i noticed the check engine light come on for
medium-length durations, especially when accelerating hard.  i did the
self-check on the new S.  i got the code of 1-4-4-2 or 1-4-4-1, lambda
sensor problem.  I noticed an almost simultaneous drop in fuel
efficiency: from 20-25mpg to 16-19mpg!  anyway, the code persisted, and
so did the intermittent check engine light.  well, the light stopped
altogether and a new self-check shows no problems.  gas mileage is still
poor, though.  any ideas?
