164 Gearbox removal

Well guys and girls it looks like it's time to take out the 164 gearbox.
I've read Matthew Dooher's instructions and it looks doable so its time
to get down and dirty again.
While I am relatively clean I thought I would ask for opinions as to
whats wrong in there, kind of guess it before I see it type of thing.
The symptoms are:-
Oil coming from flywheel inspection hole on top of the housing and
dripping out of the bottom as well.
Occasional scraping noise coupled with feeling "something" if I happen
to have the clutch pedal pressed through my left foot (the one on the
pedal).
As background this car has had a major engine rebuild recently, AND the
gearbox input bearing replaced a little less recently, but in under 5K
miles.
I thought at first that the crankshaft rear oil seal had gone bad, but
today when I drove it (gingerly) home, the thought occured to me that it
might be gearbox oil, as I noticed the feeling in the clutch pedal (sort
of buzzy feel). In the manual (cardisk) the clutch release (throwout)
bearing looks VERY close to the input shaft oil seal which looks like it
might have tab washers on it. Maybe some part of this has come loose and
is touching the clutch assy?
The feeling in the clutch is leading me away from the crank oil seal as
there should be 3 thou ish end float on the crank.

Guess away people, for the right guess there will be the satisfaction of
being right, I cant afford prizes at the moment.
