Verde Brake Problem

My trusty Verde has recently developed a peculiar problem when first driving
it in the morning. There appears to be no power assist for the first few
brake applications and then this problem becomes infrequent for several more
brake apps culminating in regular brake pressure for the remainder of the
trip. After sitting for some time it starts up again. The pump seems to be
cycling during regular intervals as before but the brake fluid DOES need to
be replaced.
Any ideas?
