Clearing the Air

Robert Abatecola asks why his GTV-6 defroster seems to work best with the
A/C on. The answer is that air run through an A/C system has its humidity
removed. Dry air removes condensation much more quickly than moist air. The
defroster on the GTV-6 is actually designed to let you run air through the
A/C to knock out humidity and then run it through the heater core to warm it
up. Hot, dry air is better than cold, dry air. Virtually all modern cars
do this today, the GTV-6 was an early adapter in 1981.

On another topic, following Professor Hertzman's URL, I reviewed the NHSTA's
Notice of Rulemaking concerning importation of non-conforming vehicles for
display and show. Interesting, but assuming I could convince the NHSTA that
I really need a Lancia Delta Integrale Evo 2 (no doubt about that!), how do
I comply with EPA air quality standards without undergoing a 20,000 mile
test?
