Oh, I forgot the best part of the story.

Being well familiar with the symptoms of rear wheel bearing failure, i.e.
the unloaded rear wheel makes the noise, and given that in this particular
car the noise was coming from the rear during left turns, and given that the
right rear wheel bearing on this car had been replaced a year ago, we were
quite certain that it was the drivers side wheel bearing that needed
replacement.

We were wrong.  After all that, the car is still howling from the rear.
