Figment of an (Alfa) imagination?

You know you're an Alfa geek, when a novelist describes an Alfa and you
can't figure out what it is.

In Robert Hellenga's The Fall of a Sparrow there are some references to Alfa
Romeos. Alas, in the following passage, I couldn't figure out what vehicle
he was describing.

"..he and Woody drove to Civitavecchia in a vintage Alfa Romeo, a stunning
coral-colored four-seater
with wide whitewalls and wire-rimmed hubcaps with coral colored spokes- one
of the models that had made
America fall in love with Italian cars after the war.... A new Giulia
engine, but exactly the same as the original..."

I thought it would be a 2000, but the Giulia engine reference doesn't make
sense.

Any suggestions?

Robin

P.S.- The book is quite wonderful- it's the story of college professor
encountering a midlife crisis spurred on by the death of his daughter.
Alas, he becomes involved with a woman who drives... of course, an Alfa
Spider.

"Woody tried to pretend that he didn't love driving the car, with its lovely
Latin lines and its five-speed all synchromesh gearbox, but Turi knew better
and always insisted that he drive at least halfway...."
