"A Switch in Time"

I just read the article entitled "A Switch in Time" by Rich Hirsch in this
month's Alfa Owner.

Does anyone know what years Alfa Spiders did not have relays to reduce the
amperage through the column switch???????????   OR   Do all Spiders from
1967 to the day they left America require this addition to their electrical
system?

Any and all information would be greatly appreciated.
