Brian Shorey hinted at this, but here's my take:

If you don't want to mess around with the metal straps, you can just
use large zippy ties. Alfa 90s (and possibly others) use zippy ties
from the factory (verified by the shop manual). Think of it as a
technology update.

I've also used zippy ties on CV boots as successful short term fixes
(the metal strap went awol).
