James Tsakirgis and the 1.7 Sud motor

James has obviously been driving his Sprint, (and too busy to play with the
AD as well he should) - it would seem to be one of about 3 in the States.

As for his proposal to put the 1.5 105 bhp motor in to the Combi, good idea.
Its STILL more powerful than a 1.8 Subaru motor, although maybe not so
relaxed and lazy...

Putting a 1.7 in to the Sprint QV will make it stonkingly fast, roughly on
par with a 164 to 60 mph, although a lot more directionally misguided! As
for the brakes/exhaust question, there may well be one thing that settles it
for you: can you extract the old caliper mounting studs from the old gearbox
and transfer them to the new one? If not, you may be looking at getting some
outboard brakes, which are significantly better in performance terms, and a
huge leap forward in ease of maintenance. For those US based AD readers who
wonder what I mean, Sud front brakes are basically identical to Alfetta rear
brakes, and on a Sud Sprint are @$%^& impossible to get to unless you're
triple-jointed. When they go wrong (and they do, being unnecessarily
complicated) it's often a motor out job to fix them.

But, given that the handbrake works on the front calipers of a sud,
replacing them with outboard brakes would tend to make hill starts
impossible! The solution is to move the front calipers to the back (dunno
how it's done, but it can be) so the handbrake still functions.

As for the exhaust, the 1.7 one is a LOT better than any of the others in
terms of reduced restriction, so if you can use it without too much
butchery, do.

And to Les Singh, sitting on the hill at the University, who is feeling
slighted by being associated with sud's, a big sorry. He's just jealous that
we can buy 6 of them for the price of his one 1750 GTV!
