Several months ago I had a gentleman's race with a Taurus SHO on Skyline
Blvd just south of San Francisco. Conditions were safe -- good visibility
and very little traffic. We were going uphill towards the Highway 1 exit. I
could be wrong but I think the Ford engine was a detuned version of the
Mustang V8 coupled with an automatic tranny. In any case, the Ford
definitely had the advantage off the line but started to fall back as soon
as the Alfa hit 3rd gear. After that it was no contest. The 164 also handled
better through the turns. As we went out separate ways we both waved.
Yesterday I saw a typical American family (four of 'em) in a Contour SVT
cruising briskly on the freeway. This was quite a refeshing sight. Your
average Bay Area family package is usually stuffed into amorphous econoboxes
or minivans.
