if the problem does in deed turn out to be the diff, why not just swap in a 
used rear axle assembly.  In general these are very robust.  it would take a 
lot of abuse to destroy one of these diffs.  This is one part you can 
generally buy used and feel confident about it's longevity.  A lot cheaper 
than buying new ring & pinion gears, and having them properly installed.
In any case, hope it turns out to be something simple & inexpensive.
