FYI -- put a digital temp gauge in the expansion tank while the car was
idling. The temperature gauge on the dash kept climbing: 190, 210, 225, etc.
The hand-held digital gauge never went past 195 degrees. Interesting. The
coolant is probably a little cooler in the expansion tank as opposed to a
reading at the themostat but I'm sure the temp only varies a few degrees or
so. It appears that the temp gauge in the dash isn't too accurate.

Never mind, it's accurate enough. My 164 was one of those that was running "a
little hot" but enboldened by repeated posts saying this was "normal" and the
gauge was no good, I ignored the warning signs. I now have a fully rebuilt
top end to show for it, after both head gaskets blew.

FULLY INSPECT YOUR CAR'S COOLING APPARATUS NOW.

I notice many 164 veterans change their water pump with each timing belt
change. Now I know why.
