VVT device changeover date

OK, folks, apparently the VVT device changeover from mechanical to electro-mechanical was NOT 1982.  I was wrong (a common enough occurance).

Speaking of which, can anyone find some real tech info on the pure mechanical VVT device?  I've got one on a spare 2L that I kept from my Chevy-truck-crumpled 81 Spider.
