Actually, the mechanical VVT was used for some time after 1982, for my 1983
Spider has one and the owner's manual shows the VVT without the wiring (not
that the drawings in the owner's manual are any paragon of accuracy).  I
believe that the conversion to solenoid operated occurred in '84 or '85.
One reason that it's hard to pin down is that most of the after market
service manuals (CarDisk, Alfa Ricambi, etc.) are based on the service
manual as of 1986, and by then it was electrically driven.

The mechanical one is reliable and simple.
