No fair, Howard, you witheld the information about the 26,000 mile Milano
gold automatic.  Fixing the car is still a better deal economically, but
now the anwer to the "what else could you get for $3000" question could be
different.  The dealer's $4500 price for the gold seems high, since it's
probably the least desirable of all Milanos on the open market, but if you
could work it down close to $3000, well...

Now, how's this for a clever rationalization that will allow you to have it
both ways: Keep the plat, but don't rebuild the engine.  Then, negotiate
with the dealer and buy the gold for the $3000 you don't spend fixing the
plat.  You can keep driving the platinum until it's flat worn out and after
that the gold should keep you going for another 10 years.
