Tire widths

Does everybody concerned about wider tires rubbing on suspension bits etc, 
also think about the maximum safe section for the width of the wheel rim? 
Somewhere there's info about the required rim section width to safely mount 
a tire of a certain tread width. There's a diminishing returns aspect 
(pardon the pun) to this exercise also, in that a narrow rim will allow the 
tread to roll and possibly negate any advantage the extra width could give 
on the correct rim. Also, the wider tire will be taller, even if of the 
same "profile" which can lead to less not more grip.
