While the above statement is true, I would like to add that the owner's
manuals also qualify this with temperature ranges the vehicle will be
driven in. For example, 10W40 should be used for -10 to 30 degrees Celcius,
and 20W50 should be used for 5 to 40 degrees Celcius - in the same vehicle!
So I would recommend 10W40 if you are in a cold area and 20W50 if you
are in a warm climate - if these are the weights recommended in your
owner's manual.
