Re New 164 Noises

Another one to check
I have a 1989 164 Lusso
On Tickover therre is a sporadic ticking, or rattle...
When driving this rattle becomes prominent between 1700 and 2000 rpm.
After great expence in diagnostics at my local dealer the verdict is now in,
the cam belt tensioner according to them is actually a cam belt
de-tensioner, the hydraulic version is fitted to my 164 and is worn. In the
Uk however a new tensioner/de-tensioner is included with the cam belt kit,
so its off to the dealer for a cam belt.

Ryan,

This is very likely the accessory belt that drives the water and a/c pumps.
This belt needs quite a bit of tension to operate properly and if the p/o
just replaced the timing belt, he had to remove this belt to do it. Even at
more or less proper tension, the (my) belt will squeal if wet. If you are a
do-it-yourselfer, remove the right front wheel and the forward fender
liner. You now have access to the belt which runs forward from the center
of the engine. the tensioner is the idler wheel to the right, held on by
two bolts. Sorry, I don't have the specs here at work. Retension this belt
and your noise should go away.

Starting up my 164S today I noticed a distinctly different noise from the
engine compartment. It sounded kind of like a cross between driving in
reverse and a remote control car. It increases in pitch with revs, not
speed, and after driving, I couldn't notice it as much. Listening under
the hood, it appeared to be coming from the belt side. The car has a
little over 50k miles and the t-belt was replaced at 50k by the previous
owner, but I would suspect the tensioner was not. Could this be the
problem? I also noticed when passing by barriers on the highway, a high
pitched squeel on and off. Is this related?
